Gumroad Affiliate Software: The Built-In and the Best Upgrades

The moment usually arrives as a DM. You sell something on Gumroad, someone with a real audience asks “do you have an affiliate program?”, and you need an answer that’s better than “let me get back to you.” So let’s build that answer properly: what Gumroad already includes, where it stops, and the best affiliate software for Gumroad when the built-in feature isn’t enough anymore. (And if you’re on the other side of that DM, looking to promote other people’s Gumroad products, the FAQ near the end points you the right way.)

First, my stake in this: I founded Rekomi, which appears on this list, so read the ranking knowing that. Being fair starts with saying plainly that Gumroad’s built-in affiliate feature is good, that plenty of sellers should simply use it, and that every number below comes from Gumroad’s live help center and each vendor’s live pages, all re-verified while writing this.

The answer up front:

Rekomi: the most complete option once affiliates are a real channel: native one-click connection, six commission models, fraud screening, and payouts in 165+ countries with tax forms handled. From $29/mo.

Gumroad’s built-in affiliates: free with your account, commissions from 1% to 75%, and Gumroad pays your affiliates itself. The right start for a first experiment.

Sled: the do-it-yourself ledger via its generic webhook. Free up to 10 affiliates, then $19/mo, and you send the affiliate payments yourself.

What Gumroad already gives you

Unlike almost every other platform I’ve written one of these guides for, Gumroad ships a real affiliate feature, documented in its own help center under Affiliates on Gumroad. It’s actually two programs, and it’s worth understanding both before you spend a dollar on anything else.

Gumroad help center article explaining the built-in Affiliates on Gumroad feature
Gumroad’s own help center documents the built-in affiliate feature in detail.

Program one is “Your Affiliates,” and here’s how it works: you add an affiliate by the email on their Gumroad account (they need a confirmed account, because that’s how they get paid), pick which products they can sell, and set a commission anywhere from 1% to 75%. They get a link like gumroad.com/a/1234567, anyone who clicks it is cookied for 30 days, and if that person buys an assigned product inside the window, the affiliate is credited on a last-click basis. There’s also a public signup form, so people can apply with their sales pitch and you approve or ignore them from your dashboard.

Now the part I’d credit loudest. When an affiliate sale lands, Gumroad pays the affiliate directly into their Gumroad balance and deducts the commission from your payout automatically. Refunds claw the commission back on their own, and membership renewals keep paying the affiliate for as long as the subscriber sticks around. You never run a payout, never open PayPal, never chase anyone’s bank details!

Program two is “Gumroad Affiliates”: anyone on Gumroad can generate links for products listed on the Discover marketplace and earn a fixed 10% per sale, on a shorter 7-day cookie. You’re opted in when your products are on Discover, and opting out is account-wide. It’s a free demand channel you didn’t have to recruit, which is a nice default.

What it costs: nothing extra. The affiliate feature rides Gumroad’s normal fees: 10% + $0.50 per direct sale plus card processing (2.9% + $0.30), a flat 30% on Discover marketplace sales, and a lower 5% + $0.50 on direct sales past $20,000 in a calendar month. I love the fee-split rule on affiliate sales specifically: fees are shared between you and the affiliate pro-rata to the commission, so a 30% affiliate carries 30% of the fees on that sale. Fair by construction.

If you want the deeper walkthrough of setup, commission math, and the affiliate-side experience, I’ve written a full guide to how Gumroad affiliates work. This article is about the decision that comes after.

Where the built-in stops

Everything below is verified against Gumroad’s current documentation, not a stale talking point. None of it is a scandal; it’s just the shape of the feature, and the shape is what decides whether you need more.

  • It’s Gumroad-only. The program lives inside your Gumroad account. If you also sell on your own site, a course platform, or anywhere else, that’s a second program with a second roster.
  • One commission shape. A percentage of the sale, 1% to 75%, and that’s the menu. No fixed dollar amounts, no per-lead or per-click deals, no tiered bonuses for top performers. And the base is the total sale amount including sales tax and shipping: sell a $100 product to a buyer whose checkout adds 20% VAT and a 25% affiliate earns 25% of $120, which is $30 instead of $25. Multiply that $5 across a year of EU sales and it’s a real line item.
  • Thin analytics. You see each affiliate’s referred sales volume; affiliates see their sales and earnings. Click data isn’t part of either dashboard, so nobody can compute a conversion rate, and your best affiliates (the ones who ask about EPC) will notice.
  • Opaque links, cookie-only attribution. Links are always gumroad.com/a/<id>, with no branding and no custom domain, and attribution rides the browser cookie. A cookie-blocking browser loses the referral unless the affiliate uses a sticky link with the id in the URL.
  • A high payout floor. Affiliates are paid through Gumroad’s standard payout system: a 7-day hold, weekly payout days, and a $100 minimum balance. A casual affiliate who refers one $19 sale waits until more commissions stack up.
  • No screening between click and cash. There’s no approval step on individual conversions and no fraud gating; a credited sale is a paid commission unless it’s refunded. Last-click attribution plus no gating is exactly the combination coupon-hunting affiliates like best.

So here’s my honest read, and it argues against my own product: if all your sales happen on Gumroad, your roster is a handful of fans, and a straight percentage is a fine deal for everyone, the built-in feature is probably the right choice. Add your people, set a rate, and go make things. The rest of this article is for the day one of those bullets starts costing you money.

The best affiliate software for Gumroad, past the built-in

The field here is small, and it’s worth saying why. The popular affiliate platforms (Rewardful, FirstPromoter, Tolt, PromoteKit) are built to watch a Stripe-style billing account, and a Gumroad sale never touches one: the customer pays Gumroad, and Gumroad pays you. As of this writing, none of them lists Gumroad among its supported platforms, and neither do Affonso or Refgrow. That leaves two real upgrade paths, and they’re built for different people.

Rekomi

Rekomi, the best affiliate software for Gumroad sellers who outgrow the built-in program

Rekomi supports Gumroad natively, and the connection is genuinely the lightest we’ve built: you click Connect Gumroad, approve once on Gumroad’s consent screen (read-only sales access), and Rekomi registers the sale, refund, dispute, and membership lifecycle notifications in your account by itself. No webhook to paste, no code to host. Referrals travel as a simple ?via= or ?rekomi_ref= parameter on your product links, renewals credit the original affiliate automatically, and because Gumroad doesn’t sign its notifications, Rekomi reads every money event back from Gumroad’s own API before recording a cent – the commission ledger is built from confirmed sales, not raw pings.

Built for: Gumroad sellers treating affiliates as a real growth channel, and anyone selling on more than Gumroad who wants one program across all of it.

Real price: $29/mo Starter, $49/mo Growth, $99/mo Pro, each with a 14-day free trial, plus a flat 3% of affiliate payouts. A month where you pay affiliates $1,000 costs $30 in take; a month where you pay nothing costs nothing extra. Gumroad’s own platform fees don’t change either way.

What you gain: everything on the “where it stops” list, basically. An approval and anti-fraud step before money moves: device fingerprinting plus click and lead scoring. Six commission models as percentages or fixed amounts, recurring for whatever duration you choose, with per-affiliate custom rates so your best partner can earn 40% while the default stays 20%. Branded signup and landing pages for recruiting, click-through analytics, in-platform messaging, and an API with Zapier support. And the money side done completely: Rekomi pays your affiliates in 165+ countries (Stripe Express direct deposits in 42, bank deposits in 60 more, PayPal in 66 more), collects W-9s and W-8s, files 1099-NECs, and affiliates keep 100% of their commission minus only the payout rail’s own cost. There’s even a Gumroad migration importer that carries your existing affiliate roster and sales history over, and the built-in program keeps working while you switch, so the two can run side by side during the transition.

What you give up: free. There’s no $0 plan, so the built-in feature beats Rekomi on price until your program has real volume. Two honest details: partial refunds are recorded but don’t reduce commissions automatically, while full refunds and chargebacks claw back on their own, and your affiliate links need the referral parameter on them, since Rekomi doesn’t get Gumroad’s /a/ redirect magic.

The Gumroad integration page has the full mechanics, and the setup doc is a ten-minute read end to end.

Sled

Sled documentation showing the generic webhook that covers Gumroad and other providers

Sled is a small, focused tracking ledger, and its docs file Gumroad under “other providers”: any platform that can POST JSON can feed its generic webhook, and the section is literally labeled “Lemon Squeezy, Paddle, Gumroad, etc.” So the support is real, but it’s the DIY lane: Gumroad’s Ping URL sends form-encoded data and Sled’s generic endpoint wants JSON, so you sit a few lines of relay code between them – an afternoon project, not a weekend one.

Built for: technical indie sellers who want the cheapest possible commission ledger and don’t mind doing the wiring and the paying themselves.

Real price: free with the full feature set for your first 10 affiliates, then $19/mo flat for unlimited, with no percentage take of any kind.

What you gain: a clean ledger at a very low price. Its sub-1KB tracking script on your own site captures ?ref= links with a 90-day attribution window, three times Gumroad’s 30 days; affiliates get a simple dashboard with clicks, conversions, and earnings, and there’s an opt-in directory where affiliates can discover your program and apply.

What you give up: the wiring, and the money side entirely. Sled’s docs are refreshingly blunt that it doesn’t move money: you pay each affiliate manually from your own PayPal, Wise, bank, or crypto wallet and click Mark paid, and tax paperwork stays your job. You’re also responsible for sending refund events through your relay, or clawbacks simply won’t happen. Fine at 5 affiliates; a monthly chore at 50.

Keep the built-in, or upgrade?

My rule of thumb, having stared at both sides of this for a while: the built-in feature is priced for testing whether affiliates work for you, and dedicated software is priced for the moment they do. In table form:

Keep Gumroad’s built-in when…Upgrade when…
All of your sales happen on GumroadYou sell (or will sell) on your own site or a second platform too
A flat percentage works for every partnerYou want fixed bounties, per-affiliate rates, or a special deal for your biggest promoter
Your affiliates are patient with a $100 payout minimumAffiliates ask when they’ll get paid, in which country, and about tax forms
A handful of trusted fans do the promotingYou’re recruiting strangers and want approval, analytics, and fraud checks before money moves
Commission on the tax-inclusive total is acceptable roundingThat extra slice per EU sale has become a number you notice

One thing I’d do in either case: write your commission rate down somewhere public before recruiting anyone. Programs with a stated rate and stated payout terms recruit noticeably better than “DM me and we’ll figure it out.”

Gumroad affiliate program: quick answers

Does Gumroad have a built-in affiliate program?

Yes, two of them. “Your Affiliates” lets you add your own partners at a custom 1% to 75% commission on your products, and “Gumroad Affiliates” lets anyone promote Discover-listed products for a fixed 10%. Both are included with every Gumroad account at no extra fee.

How do I become a Gumroad affiliate?

Create a free Gumroad account and confirm your email, then either ask a creator to add you by email or through their signup form, or use the Gumroad Affiliates dashboard to generate a 10% link for any product on Discover. My Gumroad affiliates guide walks the whole thing, including how and when you get paid.

How do Gumroad affiliates get paid?

Gumroad pays them directly: commissions land in the affiliate’s Gumroad balance after a 7-day hold and pay out on Gumroad’s weekly schedule once the balance reaches the $100 minimum, by local-currency bank deposit or PayPal where bank payouts aren’t available. US affiliates earning over $600 in a year receive a 1099-MISC from Gumroad.

Can I use Rewardful or FirstPromoter with Gumroad?

No. Neither lists Gumroad among its supported platforms as of this writing, and the reason is structural: they track sales by watching your Stripe-style payment account, and a Gumroad sale happens entirely on Gumroad’s side. Your real options are the built-in feature, Rekomi’s native integration, or Sled’s generic webhook.

Can I run Gumroad’s built-in affiliates and Rekomi at the same time?

Yes. Connecting Rekomi doesn’t touch the built-in feature, so existing /a/ links keep paying through Gumroad while new Rekomi links track in parallel. Most sellers run both during a migration, then wind the built-in program down once the roster has moved.

What commission rate should I offer on Gumroad products?

For digital products, 20% to 50% is the common band, and higher converts recruiting conversations better because your marginal cost is near zero. Remember the base: on the built-in program, commissions are calculated on the total including sales tax and shipping, so price the rate with that in mind.

Answer the DM

Whatever you pick, the right move is to reply with a real program this week. If the built-in feature fits, open your Affiliates dashboard, add that person by email at a rate you’d be happy paying a hundred times, and you’re done in five minutes! If you’re already feeling the walls, Rekomi’s Gumroad connection is one consent screen and a 14-day trial, and pricing is public. And if you go the Sled route, enjoy the build – a tidy webhook relay is its own small pleasure. The person in your DMs is offering you distribution for free until it works. Take them up on it.
