Free referral code generator

Generate clean, unique referral and affiliate codes in seconds. Set a prefix, pick a length and character set, and copy one code or the whole batch. Flip one toggle and the same tool becomes a referral link generator, turning every code into a ready tracking link. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded, logged, or gated behind an email.

Letters and numbers only; joined to the random part with a hyphen.

The craft

What makes a good referral code

A referral code does two jobs at once. It identifies a person (which partner or customer sent this buyer) and it survives handling: spoken on a podcast, typed from a story screenshot, pasted into a checkout field on a phone. Codes that do both share a few traits.

Short enough to type. Six to eight random characters covers programs of any realistic size. Every character past that costs you conversions at the checkout field.

No look-alike characters. 0 and O, 1 and l and I: leave them all out and an entire class of failed code entries and support tickets disappears. The generator above excludes them by default.

A human prefix. ANNA-X7K2P4 beats X7K2P4 alone. The prefix makes the code memorable, makes it obvious whose code it is, and lets partners promote it with pride. The random tail keeps it unguessable, so nobody can claim a discount by typing a plausible first name.

One case, everywhere. Generate uppercase and compare case-insensitively. A code that works as anna-x7k2p4 in email but fails as ANNA-X7K2P4 at checkout is a refund conversation waiting to happen.

Formats

Referral code formats that convert

ANNA-X7K2P4

Name + random

The workhorse. Personal enough to promote, random enough to stay unguessable. Use it for affiliates and creators who put their name on the recommendation.

SAVE20-QF8N

Offer + random

Leads with the benefit. Strong when the code doubles as a discount coupon and the offer itself is the hook, as in a 20% launch promotion.

PODCAST-M4TR

Channel + random

Tells you where the buyer came from before any analytics load. Handy when one partner promotes across several channels and you want per-channel numbers.

X7K2P4QD

Pure random

Maximum privacy and uniqueness, zero meaning. The right choice for machine-issued codes at scale, like a code per customer in a give-and-get program.

Attribution

How codes tie back to the person who earned the sale

A code on its own is just a string. It becomes attribution the moment something on your side maps it to a person and captures it at the point of sale. There are two common containers for the same identity.

As a link parameter. The code rides in the URL (yourdomain.com?ref=ANNA-X7K2P4), a script or your backend reads it on landing, and the visit is credited without the buyer typing anything. This is what people mean by an affiliate link generator: the link builder above does that job for every code in your batch, with whatever parameter name your stack expects.

As a coupon code. The code is entered at checkout, usually attached to a discount. This is the strongest format for audio, video, and word of mouth, where there is no link to click, and it gives the buyer a reason to actually use it.

Either way, the sale has to be recorded against the code's owner, the commission calculated, refunds clawed back, and the partner paid. That bookkeeping is the part a generator cannot do, and it is exactly the part affiliate software exists for.

FAQ

Referral code questions, answered.

Is this referral code generator really free?

Yes. No signup, no email gate, no usage cap that matters (up to 50 codes per batch, unlimited batches). Everything runs in your browser with the Web Crypto API, and nothing you type or generate is sent to a server.

How long should a referral code be?

Six to eight random characters is the sweet spot for most programs. Shorter than six and you risk collisions or guessable codes; longer than ten and people stop typing them at checkout. If the code will mostly travel inside a link rather than being typed, length matters less and you can go longer for extra uniqueness.

Should referral codes use letters, numbers, or both?

Both, minus the look-alikes. Mixing letters and numbers gives you a much larger space at the same length, and excluding 0/O and 1/l/I removes the characters people misread when a code is spoken aloud or typed from a screenshot. If your billing platform is case-insensitive, generate uppercase and treat lowercase entries as equal.

What is the difference between a referral code and a referral link?

Same identity, different container. A referral code is typed at checkout or signup (SARAH-X7K2P4); a referral link carries the identity in a query parameter (yourdomain.com?ref=SARAH-X7K2P4) so nobody types anything. Strong programs issue both for every partner, keyed to the same person, because each wins in different channels: links win on social and blogs, codes win in podcasts, videos, and word of mouth.

Are the generated codes unique?

Within a batch, yes, duplicates are filtered out. Across batches and across time, uniqueness is your system's job: whatever tool tracks your program should reject a new code that collides with an existing one. At 8 characters from a 30-character alphabet there are roughly 650 billion possibilities, so random collisions are extraordinarily unlikely.

How do I make these codes actually track sales?

A code only pays for itself when something records who used it and what they bought. That is affiliate software's job: map each code to a partner, capture it at checkout (as a coupon code or a link parameter), attribute the sale, and calculate the commission. Rekomi does exactly this, with per-affiliate coupon codes on Stripe, Paddle, Shopify, and more.

When the codes need to pay people

Make these codes actually track sales.

In Rekomi, codes like these become real trackable assets: each affiliate gets their own referral link and coupon code, sales are attributed automatically on Stripe, Paddle, Shopify, and more, and commissions and payouts run themselves. 14-day free trial, from $29/mo.
